Join a full day Winter Walking Skills Workshop to learn all the basic skills you need to start exploring the Scottish mountains in the winter. Aimed at winter novices and covering what to pack, basic movement skills, ice axe and crampon use, self arrest, route choice and avalanche awareness. If you have some summer walking experience and want to find out about what is involved in winter walking then this is the one for you.
The Winter Walking Skills Workshop starts at 8.45 am at Nevis Range where we take the gondola to 650 metres, getting on to the snow and ice with minimum walking time. We finish for the last gondola back down at about 4.30 pm so you get a full seven hours of coaching.
The workshop is run by Abacus Mountain Guides and there will be a maximum of 6 people with each experienced Winter Mountain Leader. Winter boots, crampons and an ice axe are required for this course but if you don’t have your own they can be hired from Ellis Brigham in Fort William. Helmets are also required and these can be provided free of charge by Abacus Mountain Guides.
