Environmental Selection Line Up:

Voice of the Glaciers

Director – Sindre Kolbjornsgard

In the summer of 2019 four young adventurers embark on a dangerous expedition into the Arctic with the intent of documenting the true story of the effects of the changing climate. Through Eric’s scientific degree in glaciology and Kris’ crucial knowledge of navigating the local terrain working as an Arctic guide, the team approach the endeavour with open minds, seeking evidence to determine fact from hysteria about the rate of glacial melting.

Equipped with photos more than 100 years old, they set out to find and re-photograph the locations, traversing the brutally unforgiving and harsh Arctic terrain, where they are forced to come face to face with climate change.

The Cull – Scotland’s Deer Dilemma

Director – Ted Simpson

The future of the Scottish Highlands is under threat. With red deer dominating the ecosystem, should these landscapes be wild once more? If so, what happens to the people that call these places home?

There are estimated to be over 350,000 red deer in Scotland. Deer populations, when uncontrolled, have a massive impact on the landscapes of the Highlands. As a result, deer are culled each year in an attempt to manage and maintain the ecosystem that they are a central part of. Over the last 60 years however, a debate has raged regarding the size, nature and purpose of the deer cull.

‘The Cull’ explores the different approaches to deer management taken by landowners and managers in Scotland, and delves into the reasoning behind the vitriol.

When The Snow Melts

Director – James Stevens

Tucked away in the remote Scottish Highlands, Alan and Fiona Stewart have a very special way of life, running their sleddogs from the backdoor and into the mountains. However the winters are becoming warmer. How can they cope with the changing climate?

AWAKEN

Director – SunGod

This is the story of three groups of winter adventurers, each dedicated to the pursuit of adventure, each loyal to their home playground. Filmed in three iconic winter locations, AWAKEN follows these adventurers as they are faced with the growing impact of climate change, right in their backyard. Contrasting the happiness we draw from the mountains with the harsh reality of an uncertain future, this film reminds us that the environmental message is truly simple; to adventure is to connect with the wild. It is this connection that empowers us to protect these fragile spaces and inspire others to follow.
